Business Intelligence
A data warehouse extracts the raw data from a number of disparate databases to create an information store. This allows users equipped with the right analytical tools to access and analyse the information. This turns information into knowledge.
Equipped with this knowledge the user can then create rules from the trends they have discovered. These can be simple ones such as setting stock re-order levels based on minimum numbers, or more complex what-if projections based on trends and assumptions. This is Business Intelligence (BI).
With these rules defined it is then possible to create plans to implement the rules. Typically, OLAP cubes will be built on the data in the data warehouse. This enables the information to be extracted that allows informed decisions to be made that can improve business success.
